Chapter 5
Prior to reading chapter I hadn't really considered what a numbers game insurance really is. I know that logically it makes sense for corporations who's job it is to get people to pay them in order to receive financial assistance to be concern about about which customers are safe investments in order to bring in maximum profit. I find the idea of people being investments very disconcerting. To me this goes beyond merely acting in rational self-interest in order to make money, to me this constitutes a complete disregard for the inherent value of human life. No matter what the business situation I don't think people should just be numbers in a computer being ranked by the probability of needing the insurance agency to provide the assistance they are paying for. "The insurance company makes a profit by determining the average cost of treatment for all its policyholders and then charging slightly more".
