Chapter two, question two
2. Do the issues affect your life? Directly or indirectly? On a daily basis, or more generally? Now or in the future?
"Because of the "marriage tax," second earners in families with high household incomes, who are more likely to be women, pay an average of 50 cents in taxes for every dollar they earn, which profoundly affects the decision to work or stay at home"(Wheelan 49).
I found this entire chapter about incentives very interesting. This passage in particular stood out to me because I knew that a marriage tax existed but I had no idea the second earner in high income households was taxed half of their income. A lot of people chose not to work because of this tax. I could also see many people getting frustrated because of this. especially the spouses of high earners, who were board staying at home. This does not affect me right now because I don't have a job and I am not married but it may affect me in the future.
