Chapter 2

"Human beings are complex creatures who are going to do whatever it takes to make themselves as well off as possible" (36).

Ain't that the truth! This statement is not at all surprising, but it clearly sums up the basis of humanity. I felt as those the rhino story worked well with this. We all know that the black rhino is high on the endangered species list, yet some people continue poaching anyway. Not living in the native area with the animal, you would think that those people would be the ones trying their hardest to protect it, but really for them the animal can be seen as an annoyance. Essentially, the rhino is worth more dead than alive, so, the possibility of letting people hunt them is greater, but only if they are getting paid- other wise it's not worth their time. In order to create efficient ways to help protect this animal, we have to have a better understanding on the humans and not the rhinos. Which exactly what this chapter was on . Displaying the fact that humans think on the basis of what they benefit from a situation. Self interest drives people to un rational behavior, creating situations that severely effect others. But the problem with this is for one person what they are doing is seen as horrible and unjust, while others see it all purely economical benefits and rational thinking, it's all determined on the perspective.
