Chapter 4
This chapter focused on whether or not the government should be involved in the economic aspect of the country and the difference in private and public sectors. An example that helps clarify things for me was the letter that a women sent. The letter expresses the women's fear and frustration of the government being involved in health care. She wanted the government to butt out and for them to "not touch her Medicare". The irony being that Medicare is a government run program. (A very stereotypical thing to do, to defend and fight against something without attaining the full knowledge of the subject). Along with that, the example about the DMV helped explaining the difference in the public and private sectors.(yes I know it is in the beginning of the chapter) this example the government owned operations are often viewed as inefficient. The government doesn't add fancy details to the DMV because by doing so, it wouldn't bring in any more customers in. The DMV is not like a coffee shop, you don't go in because you are attracted by the opportunity of attaining your morning pick-me-up. So why dot he extra work? So, because of this, private sectors sound appealing but really they would compete in price, quality of service and would issue licenses to those who don't deserve them. So true! Overall, this chapter was interesting, filled with great examples to learn from.
