Chapter 6 q. 5

  • Talk about specific passages that struck you as significant—or interesting, profound, amusing, illuminating, disturbing, sad. What was memorable?

"a wealthy man is a man who earns $100 a year more than his wife's sister's husband"

When I first read this I was extremely confused and mislead, but once I read the rest of the paragraph I got more incite. It was shown in an observation sample of different women that they are more likely to get a paid job if their wife's husband was making more than their own husband. I love this, because I always think of competition between siblings, especially when it comes to possessions or wealth. Human capital is really just a big competition, and whoever is most intelligent, wins. It's really unfortunate that this competition is so unfair, and doesn't allow those with no access to education to have any wealth. Education is extremely important, and hard to provide. It what makes up most of our human capital, and I hate to think some people just don't have a chance. I see this with competition to get into college as well. Many people want their kids to go to the higher ranked schools because then they would be more accessible to a high income. I think it really doesn't matter what school you go to, but that you pushed yourself and became passionate about something that really deserves the human capital description. Human capital is something that everyone is aware of, but only some compete.
