Chapter 6
I find it telling that though it seems that the author so easily slips in the references to investing in skills, and human capitol as a solution to help alleviate poverty when the opposite seems to be occuring. Despite the obvious connections between a skilled workforce, poverty, and economic growth, we continue to lag in education, for whatever reason, all the while educational budgets are slashed nationwide. I heard a speaker last year that mentioned something of a similiar tune and suggested that it's because the benefits of education will not be felt tomorrow, but rather in the future, and that we often place short term goals ahead of long term goals. In this scenario, investing in the short term is not helping, as our test scores ("Skills") continue to get lower and lower.
