Chapter eight question six
6.) talk about specific passages that struck you as significant- or interesting, profound, amusing, illuminating, disturbing, sad. What was memorable?
"Doing the right thing- making a decision that generates more benefits for the nation than costs- will not cause people to stand up and cheer. It is far more likely that the many people you have made better off will hardly notice while the small group you have harmed will pelt your car with tomatoes"(Wheelan 187-188).
Chapter eight talked all about the significance of organized interests and how much power people can gave when banded together. Wheelan was talking about how when he was president of the Seminary townhouse association the CTA was in the process of expanding the elevated train track to an area right by the town houses. Making these tracks and stations handicap accessible would move the tracks even closer to the town houses. Although the handicapped tracks would benefit not the people riding the trains and the company it would hurt the people living in the town houses. Charles Wheelan, along with other residents of the town houses wrote letters and petitioned to have the tracks shifted away from their homes. This is a perfect example of the quote above. The good majority of the population that would benefit from the additional train tracks didn't get involved at all with the construction of them and the small group of people living the town houses got very involved.
