Ostrem- ch.6 question 3.

Charles Wheelan talks about important qualities that are needed for a healthy economy. These qualities have huge implications for the future. Productivity is very important for economies. Citizens are richer when the country's economy is more productive. Wheelan says that children will be better of than their parents if they are more productive than their parents. This scenario follows the pattern of history. America is better off in the present than it has ever been in its past. Thus productivity which is strongly related to the level of human capital is key to the success of America's future economy. And becuase high levels of human capital means higher productivity (when people know how to do more things, companies can produce better things and at faster speeds) it is also important to have excellent educations to produce citizens with high levels of human capital. When human capital is advanced it produces beneficial long-term consequences for the future. This is easier said than done, which is why America's future is a little frightening. I hear a lot of complaints about poor public education. But I think America's economy will continue to increase its productivity with the help of technology and our well above average education.
