On the stat Wheelan gives in Chapter 6 that 1-5 American children live in poverty - 40% of them being African American. Honestly, one of America's top priorities should be diminishing that number and hopefully someday eliminating such a statistic. As of late, it seems to be we have been focusing more on international relations, such as giving aid to struggling parts of the world...less fortunate countries than the U.S., and fixing other peoples' wars which seems as if the government puts all their attention towards them rather than helping its' own people. There are groups and organizations that help make a positive difference for these struggling Americans, the government should be stepping in and helping more. I think that the federal government should do things like funding the state governments so that they can help the community within the state. It usually gets fairly messy when the federal government steps in and gets involved with a state's issues, but those state governments should know what is best for their own sake, and I think with federal funding we could potentially lower the poverty rate. As a powerhouse country, I think we should acknowledge our own problems before helping outside worlds. Yes we should still be helping out foreign areas, we need to (at the same time) pick up our own slack, at least make a significant effort on improving it.
