Chapter 2 - question 6 - Rausch

"In some cases, poachers have continued killing dehorned rhinos, for a number of reasons. Killing the animals without horns saves the poachers from wasting time tracking the same animal again. Also, there is some money to be made from removing and selling even the stump of the horn. And, sadly, dead rhinos, even without horns, make the specie more endangered, which drives up the value of existing horn stock."
As an animal lover and someone who has since a young age tried to keep animals safe, it is disheartening to hear that the simple fact of more dead animals means more money for a poacher because the overall price for horns goes up.  Personally, I believe that there could be more done. One could be that the conservation personal sell the horns that they have taken to protected the rhinos and sell them for a small price to people to establish a system to protect the rhinos by selling their horns to the people who would have killed the rhino to get the horn. Another option would be to encourage black rhino breeding programs and educate the people of the importance of the black rhinos.
